Global Project

The Xaverian Missionaries have lived and worked in Coatbridge since 1958. Between 1960 and 1985 the Society ran a Junior Seminary for boys who were interested in the Xaverian missionary ideal. When the College closed, an idea for a project emerged which would put the skill, experience and resources of the Xaverian Community at the service of the local church, society and schools in a new and exciting way. In collaboration with a broad range of local partners, the vision of the Global Education project began to take shape.

The Lanarkshire Global Education Centre is based on a successful model developed by the Xaverians in Italy. The Centro Educazione Mondialità (CEM) in Brescia has its roots in the Mondialità Movement, founded by the St. Francis Xavier Mission Society in 1942.

The principles of the Mondialità Movement are:

  • Development of intercultural values and skills;
  • Promotion of inter-religious sharing and dialogue;
  • Acceptance of diversity;
  • Encouragement of responsible global citizenship;
  • Exploration of spirituality to help sustain social action.
